We're coming up on one month since we went moderator-less (other than me). What do you think of this experiment so far?

We've had a few bouts of spam/porn posts, but because of some other measures I've taken I think there's been a drastic reduction in the amount. It probably takes me longer to get to than when we had more moderators who could delete and ban the spam.

There certainly has been a LOT less drama. Discussions have been happening and I've not been interfering much at all, yet we still seem to be well within the rules in most instances. Less drama is a good thing.

Do you agree? Do I have my head up my ass on this? Did I just violate my own rules by asking the previous question?

I have to agree with "nic" regarding the bad language. I realize people use this offensive terminology regularly in public, but that still isn't any excuse for using it in here. In that these forums are viewed by a wide range of people (and in all age groups) it says little about us to the average person. I'm quite sure those who use offensive language surely wouldn't do so in front of their own children.

I think most forum software has automatic word replacement that can be used to automatically clean up language without any actual moderation... if you want to say something, you have to use nice words or your post has "fudge" instead of "f___" or has "==censored==" in it.

Our software does have the ability to do word replacement, but I need to know which words to replace and trust me, you start heading down a slippery slope towards censorship. How come no one is reporting this foul language? I don't think I've seen any reports to that effect in the last month. I really didn't know this was a problem.

From an administrative perspective, my stress level has obviously gone down. To that point, I haven't noticed a drop in drama in the public arena because quite frankly, that bridge was always blown before anyone got a chance to cross it. Now, there has been a significant drop in posts relevant to EL issues elsewhere. Threads have been dropping like flies.
