I have never seen you use an excessive amount of such inapropriate language in the past so I feel that you have nothing to worry about here.

If you are referring to me Al, I am so relieved you said that. I can now go to bed a happier and more confident person !

See, I have a small problem with that. Is it just me, or does anyone else not want to have to worry that what they say may not be acceptable for the "kiddies"? This is a forum for adults, isn't it? I mean, common courtesy is fine, but beyond that, you guys are starting to scare me.

I know we have had pre-teens posting here. Some were fairly regular for a while, but the younger ones seem to lurk more than anything unless they have a homework assignment. Given the subject matter of Animals and the Environment and the size of the Envirolink family I think it is pretty safe to say we have a number of younger readers, whether they are regulars or not I cannot say.

IMO everyone involved got a little touchy and tried to flex a bit....AL went overboard on the moderating, but others went overboard the other way with the sarcasm and constant referrals to it. As I posted elsewhere , everyone knows what is acceptable and as adults we shouldn't need supervisors to oversee our behaviour.

I would have thought the same but it seems to be a problem now for some reason. It seems the longer it goes the worse it gets .. language wise. At least you have the right idea ... maybe it will catch on.

Perhaps due to topic content as much as anything else, why can't you bar access to " school kids " ?
I thought this was supposed to be for adult discussions after all !

Why do parents allow access to forums anyway ? Surely they realise that some subjects are not suitable !

Have we got to discuss only suitable topics now such as the weather and the price of shrimp ?[/quote]

This has never been a forum exclusive to adults. The subject matter does attract younger people who feel strongly and want to learn more. This is opposed to the other sites who push an agenda on them as a form of brainwashing.

I think you will find that youngsters use similar or worse language than found on this forum.
They will certainly learn that it is ok to use guns and to kill animals, also the cruelty of humans to each other and to animals. A few bad words pale into insignificance IMO.

The next thing on the agenda may be banning poor grammar and bad spelling ?

We tried that once and Josh got lonesome here all by himself ...

Post subject:  Re: Discussion of Forum Rules

Yikes, I step away from the computer for the day and look what breaks out! I want everyone (moderators and everyone else) to step back from the line for a second, please.

A few points:

1) EnviroLink abides by COPPA rules and as of today has never received any notifications from parents allowing their under-13 year old to use the forum. As such, we should all assume that none of our users are under 13. (clearly we have many that ACT like they are under 13)

2) The rules as written are not clear on what exactly are inappropriate words and which words are inappropriate. If I have to sit down and actually write out a list of such words, I will immediately shut down the board and give up on the lot of you. (it should be noted that I wrote the last sentence and edited out a few choice swear words).

3) I am not actually concerned about casual use of "swear" words when they aren't being applied to others, within reason. I am VERY concerned about the level of animosity that has been present here and how abusive users have been towards each other.

4) I VERY much agree with the sentiment expressed by OhioSteve about the fact that there should be no need for adult supervision here. Users should behave themselves and not be abusive towards others.

5) Grace... in general the term "ass" can be used in many ways that I would not have a problem with, but you expressed it in an aggressive, abusive manner. Yes, you aimed it at a group of people who may or may not be present on the boards, but you are not innocent in this one. Given your involvement in other abusive behavior here recently, I have no problem with the Animallover or anyone else on the board calling you on it.

6) I would like to direct (publicly) all moderators to exercise some judgment and intervene when inapropriate language is truly abusive towards others (here or not). I would also ask that instead of editing one word or two in a post, you either:

a) delete the entire post without notice and then issue a warning to the user; or
b) if you are feeling generous, give the user a chance to correct their infraction of the rules

7) I do not expect anyone who volunteers their time helping out here (which is everyone, including me) to be forced into the role of baby sitter. If you don't like the rules, feel free to discuss them here but expect that they will be enforced until they change. If you don't like it, please go somewhere else.

Everyone, please use some common sense and move on...

The entire internet is open for kids to read. It's up to the parents to monitor what websites they access. If they don't believe this one is appropriate, it shouldn't be our problem because there is much, much worse out there. This one is very mild and they probably hear worse in their school corridors re: language. Who wants "kiddies" here anyway? I mean what exact age bracket are you and Wayne referring to? And how do we know some 10 year old is actually TEN? No ages are req'd to register here.

It's not just you. I really cringe at having to use BUTTOCKS for ass. Ridiculous.

Noted Josh. But I resent being singled out when OHIOSTEVE, Pops, SD, fisherman, Donnie, etc. continually bait and antagonize me. They enjoy yanking my chain. Maybe their goal is to get me banned.

Edited to add, AND I've been insulted here plenty and called a bitch, pathetic, ignorant, stupid, full of crap, etc. etc. etc. I give back what I get. Not fair to be singled out in this regard. Enough.

I believe you are the first user here to cross the line since I re-posted our rules and asked our moderators to help enforce them. You are not being singled out for any other reason than you crossed a line. I agree that you have been on the receiving end of a lot of abusive language here (as well as dishing some out) and that is one of the reasons why I would hope that you would support us in helping to get it to stop.

On the issue of age of our users, we obviously don't know unless someone enters in their birthday (which you can do in your profile... if you do, the system wishes you happy birthday on the right day), but every user who is posting here has clicked that they certify that they are 13 years or older. You can not get on the system without doing that, and that has been in place for a very long time.

Josh, Thanks.

PS - I realize you need to support your mods here, but I do suspect "smartass" wasn't exactly crossing the line. Are you going on record saying we cannot use it? Or assclown? I can understand not calling people here those names, but AT&T reps? Come on.
