This is NOT our idea but the requirement of our society and the laws therein:

Members are asked to respect the copyright of other users, sites, media, etc. and not to post copyrighted material on this site. All third-party content (ie: content not authored by you specifically for this forum) should be posted in an excerpted form that conforms with standard Fair Use principles. It is strongly recommended that you use the following format to refer to third-party content:

Title of Content (title should be linked to the source)
Name of Source
First paragraph of content, or better, your short description of what the content is about written in your own words.
URL of source content in http://www.sourceABCcontent.org/blah.html form
Since there are many thousands of possible sources spread out across the Internet, it is impossible for us to know if a posting represents a copyright infringement. The author of a posting is responsible for ensuring that his/her message does not violate any extant copyrights.

Members should respect the bandwidth of other users and sites. Inline image tags that point to data stored on third party systems the user has not received permission to link to, may be removed.

The government's information on the subject:

http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

the nature of the copyrighted work;

amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

Just to back up what Wayne is saying here, US Copyright Law is really bad and any violation here puts EnviroLink at risk. While I'm sure no one intends to do that, we have to enforce the rules. A user has received a temporary 7 day ban because of violation of our rules stemming from a copyright infringement. As much as I hate to do this, we have to. Sorry.

Oh, so this is why June was banned? Why start with her? She wasn't aware and/or simply made a mistake. I have seen countless, COUNTLESS, posters do the same thing & were simply corrected. Unbelievable you would ban jhawk for this. I'm so angry I'd better stop right friggin now.

Sorry, but that's way things go. She was warned and kept pressing the issue. Arguing and making accusations against the mods is a sure fire way to get a temporary ban. She had been warned in the past about it. It may have been a mistake on her part,but the Forum Rules are there for the reading. Instead of admitting her error she lashed out at a couple of mods and now she has to deal with the consequences. As Josh said,'sorry but it had to be done.'

I don't understand why certain people here always rush to the conclusion that we are oppressing others. Seriously. Do you think anyone here likes the idea of issuing a temporary ban on a user that is normally an excellent contributor to the forums? Do you think we just rushed off and banned the person without any warning or reason? I'd suggest upping your meds a little bit and think it through. Getting "so angry" about this and rushing to false conclusions is not very productive, and I'm glad you stopped right "friggin" there.
