Sad but true, J.
In some states here in the U.S; we have programs where you can turn in empty pop-containers for a small amount of change. I wish we can do this with prescipt drugs; but I can't think of anyway to make it work.

Here in Britain, we have a scheme where any unused or out of date prescription drugs can be returned to any major pharmacy for destruction safely, rather than flushing down the loo etc.
We have the same type program here in the USA, most pharmacies will take old drugs and properly dispose of them.
Apparently the pharm companies are allowed to dump into rivers because the concentrations will become harmless quickly from dilution. The old crap of "the solution to pollution is dilution". I wouldn't doubt some money goes under the table and/or for campaign contributions. The corruption is rampant all the way up and through.
Illegal dumping of even worse stuff goes on, too.
Another one is the inability of city treatment facilities to get out many hormones and pharmaceuticals before the effluent is put back into rivers. That is changing fish sex, with cancers in fish also reported. Then when the next city takes its drinking water out, all they do is add chlorine and say the chemicals are of very low concentration and its safe to drink.
If it is changing fish from 50/50 male/female to 65% female/30% both in one/ and 5% male, plus causing fish cancers, what is it doing to our young boys?
The best thing to do is get a good filter for all your drinking water from questionable sources. Probably also a good idea to put a filter on shower water, too.
