Have a lot of CFLs at home, work has been standard fluorescents for over 20 years now. Have switched some to LED because of application with mixed results. The LED's in the recessed lights inside have worked great, but the ones used in the post lights outside have not worked well at all for some reason. The CFLs have worked better even with the temperature issue during cold weather.

I prefer LEDs for flashlights and flat screen TV and monitors, and electronics lights(aircraft and vehicle instruments, amps, stereo systems). CFLs for most of the rest of our solar house lighting, mainly because of the cost comparison. A 50K hour LED of the same lumens as a 60 watt incandescent costs $50 and uses 10 watts. A 10K hour CFL of the same lumens uses 11 watts and costs $4. LED household lights will have to come down in price a whole lot to be competitive. :-

LEDs are much more cost efficient in the long run and even though one LED bulb might cost more than one CFL bulb at this point in time the cost of electricity is significantly cheaper using LEDs instead of CFLs. Over a 30,000 hour lifespan one LED bulb will only use about 60 kWh compared to 420 for CFL bulbs. Not to mention it takes 3 CFL bulbs to match the 30,000 hour lifespan that one LED bulb can produce. The following website can break down the costs for you guys: http://gogreenledbulbs.com/topic/11-com ... s-cfl.aspx

$14 for a 60 watt equivalent? It doesn't give the lumens, which is what counts. The actual 60 watt incandescent lumens LED is $50, the cheaper one is the same size but NOT the same lumens. They are about 1/3 the light that the 60 watt equivalent ones are. The 60 watt equivalent lumens CFL I have are 10K+ hrs for $4 and use 11 watts.
The equivalent lumens LED is $50 for 50K hrs at 10 watts.
CFL--5@$4=$20 + (11w X 50K=550KWH, X .20= $110) T=$130
LED--1@$50 + (10W x 50K=500KWH, X .20= $100) T= $150
I have only replaced 5 out of 30 CFLs in over 13 years!!

CFL's for all of the household lights except still use incandescent flood lamps on the outside lights that are on motion detectors. They only stay on for 10 minutes after being activated.

LED's for flashlights only .
