We've had more than a few in my lifetime here in the USA. I think the grid is wrong, a waste, and a weakness.
That is one set of reasons why I am totally off grid.

Here in Saskatchewan, we get lots of outages because we have more then enough electricity production. If some place a couple thousand miles away in another country has a major power outage, the increase in production of our Saskatchewan power plants starts over-loading the lines and tripping breakers that think a power line is shorting out. We have about 8 power outages per year caused specifically from USA outages and another half-dozen from Canadian outages in Ontario or Quebec. A big portion of Saskatchewan's economy is moved by exported electricity.
