Apparently satellite data existed well before the 1979 start date for all the current Arctic ice extent/area graphs. What is so significant about 1979? Well, that is when Arctic had peaked which makes the current trend look like a somewhat linear and continuous reduction in Arctic sea ice. But we actually had satellite data before 1979 and the IPCC knew it because this very graph appears in the IPCC's First Assessment Report http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... hz_0l_yUSg
This a PDF so you have to download it to see the graph. For those interested, it is on page 224 of the PDF. You can clearly see that the early 70's had noticeably less ice than 1979 and probably more similar to today's conditions. You draw your own conclusions.
