I keep hearing these wonderful stories about how various alternatives to fossil fuel are ramping up led by solar and wind. Well it's true, the percentage increases appear quite impressive. You see charts like this http://www.earth-policy.org/plan_b_upda ... /update117 You begin to think maybe we're going to get over the hump on this energy global warming thing. And then you come across an expert projection of our energy output to 2040 and you feel it's all fools gold. Right along with alternatives fossil fuel is shooting upward too. http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/ieo/more_highlights.cfm

Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? I don't see it short of some major die-off.

A few nights ago, the weather channel aired "Tipping Points".
You go with the Fourth Tipping Point thread, and they said the open ocean self warming tipping point has passed.
Even though Hansen said 2016 and another 2023 for the tundra methane tipping point to happen well before the population crash circa 2045, unless emissions are reduced 90%.
Then we have reports of much more fossil fuel burning going to happen, so there is no light except Heaven at the end of the tunnel.
The speed and amount of warming will be much greater than PETM, so species can not adapt fast enough and ecosystems fail globally
over a few hundred years. No Venus runaway effect, hopefully, and life will return in pre-interglacial numbers in millions of years. The glacial ages with inter-glacial epochs will return after two skips in the cycle.
There is no technology that will keep people alive or in suspended animation long enough, just science fiction scenarios.
