Post subject:  Paper or Plastic? What would you choose?

Hey all!

I am currently working on an investigatory project regarding usage of Paper or Plastic as shopping bags and I need your opinions. =) (Grocery shopping, mall shopping etc.) I need different opinions on what you would rather use when out grocery/mall shopping; Paper, Plastic or a reusable bag?

1. Why use .....(what ever choice you made)
2. Does the area/country you live in affect your choice?
3. Does your country/state/town/village implement any laws regarding usage of plastic or paper as shopping/grocery bags?
4. What would you prefer to use? Why?

That's it for now folks. Thanks for the help! :)

The usage will vary. Grocery shopping you can tak your own bags and they work well. Shopping in the mall is not as easy with your own bags due to size differential. I have used the larger bag to hold everything and return the smaller bag when possible.

We have two cloth grocery bags we usually forget. Plastic is reused in all the small trash cans as liners. Extra, holed, and paper bags used sometimes for frozen items, are burned in the wood stove.
It is not worth the extra emissions to take them in for recycling.
Aluminum gets recycled, and so does packaging materials with using for heat. Toxic plastics like PVC are used minimally because they take 50K years to break down and are toxic when burned. I recycle old or given credit type cards into guitar picks.
Of course, we live in a more rural area. If in a city that has curbside recycling we would, do that instead.
Right now, we divide it up into burnable and non-burnable, and compostable and non-compostable.
Ideally, everything needed to live would be from the local area, and your own greenhouses/Earthships. Only enough people to be sustainable (i.e. USA 40 million, and globally, 600 million, and going down with depletion and pollution).

I reuse plastic constantly, though not for groceries. I do it until the bags literally fall apart, then I chunk them into the recycle bin. The only time I prefer paper is when I get a small gift type bag with handles on it. Whole Foods has giant paper bags with handles, so I like them too. Get my drift? Handles are good.

Reusable bags would be fine so long as I didn't have to lug them around and keep up with them when I wasn't shopping.
