Post subject:  Red Wolf Restoration "Scandal"

Hello. This is my first post. Except for hunting forums, nobody seems to be discussing this.

I support saving endangered animals and there's a conservation battle going in North Carolina with red wolves vs. hunters.

Situation:

-Red wolves and coyotes look a lot alike and can hybridize. Red wolves are native to the southeastern United States and coyotes are native to the western United States.

-Red wolves were hunted down to a small population. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife moved red wolves to North Carolina and that is the only area they exist. They say there is less than 100 left.

http://www.fws.gov/redwolf/

-Coyotes took over the eastern United States and are a problem for U.S. Fish and Wildlife trying to save red wolves because they can hybridize.

-To control coyotes, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sterilizes coyotes and releases them back into the wild. They don't kill them. They spay and neuter them like the Humane Society does with cats and dogs. This is because coyotes will protect their territories from new coyotes and they can't produce offspring if they are sterilized. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service keeps track of these coyotes with radio-collars. So when one is killed or fought off by another, they go in and trap those new coyotes and do the same thing.

-Sterilized coyotes can't hybridize with red wolves because they can't produce offspring. This keeps hybrids from being produced.

-As red wolves increase, they replace sterilized coyotes. This means U.S. Fish and Wildlife is swapping coyotes with red wolves. Red wolves establish packs and keep coyotes out.

Problem:

-The state agency is promoting coyote hunting in the conservation area where red wolves are. Coyotes can be hunting day and night, anytime of the year. Coyotes are also allowed to be sold alive to pens to be killed by hunting dogs.

http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/fox_penning/

-Red wolves are getting shot by hunters at alarming rates because they look like big coyotes.

-Nobody gets in trouble because they play dumb and say they thought is was a coyote.

-Red wolf packs are destroyed by hunters and coyotes overwhelm the area.

-Red wolves can't find red wolf mates and breed with coyotes.

-Sterilized coyotes are shot and killed too. So red wolves are finding coyotes that can produce offspring.

-Red wolf numbers are falling and they're producing less pups.

What's happening:

-The Animal Welfare Institute, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Red Wolf Coalition filed a law suit against the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and won.

https://awionline.org/cases/protection-red-wolves

-These groups said the state agency violated the endangered species act by allowing unregulated hunting of coyotes where red wolves are.

-The judge ruled in favor of the environmental groups and stopped coyote hunting in the conservation area.

-The state agency stripped U.S. Fish and Wildlife of their trapping permit. Now they can't trap wolves and coyotes.

-The Red Wolf Coalition is asking for support.

-Hunters are publicly slandering people working to save red wolves.

My older son thought he saw a younger red wolf a couple of weeks ago, but as he was well outside the normal range for the reintroduced wolves I suspected that it was a coyote. Now I am wondering if it might have been a hybrid as he has seen coyotes before and should not have been that confused, although it can be done.

Loss of biodiversity is an environmental issue so the impacts on the attempt to reintroduce red wolves to return to a more diverse situation would then also be an environmental issue. This could just as easily be in either forum or both for that matter.

No spam. People are trying to ban coyote killing contests in CA and CA just listed gray wolves as an endangered species. For several years, states have increased opportunities to hunt coyotes at night. With this ruling and coyote killing contests soon to be banned in CA, it seems the pendulum is swinging the other way. Seems like this ruling could have broad impacts.

Interesting this thread came up in a red wolf scandal search. Yes, this ruling is having an impact. The wildlife resources commission here in NC had to settle because they were in the wrong. Then they passed two resolutions demanding the fish and wildlife service to remove all the red wolves from the wild. Right now, the fish and wildlife service is contemplating shutting the program down.

The thread that was mentioned above is on the NC Hunt and Fish forum. Its been active for over a year and is a cesspit of attacks on people associated with red wolf conservation. In fact, that’s the purpose of the thread. The main guy is a real estate developer named jett Ferebee but the forum's internet stalker (BR549) is another wealthy guy named Scott Griffin who sits on the NC Sportsmen’s Caucus advisory board.

I wouldn’t ask anyone to go through that cesspit. In fact, most of us on the NCHF forum don’t post in it. But feel free to take a dive if you guys are still interested. Things have heated up with this and the fish and wildlife service will be deciding on the fate of these wolves soon.

I don't know. You're free to smell it as a covert information and physiological manipulation operation designed to win over hearts and minds.

This thread has been on your forum for year and it has the same name as our thread. I just stumbled on it. I said before I use the NCHF forum. Jett Ferebee began the NCHF red wolf restoration scandal thread, posts under his first name, and spams everyone with his contact info and emails. One of our administrators let it slip in a private PM that BR549 is Scott Griffin. Since then it's gotten around with a few of us. Makes sense he posts a bunch of political threads because of his involvement with the NC Sportsmen's Caucas. Here's a short version of the NCHF thread with the same title - http://agenda21news.com/2015/02/wolf-le ... -carolina/

There was a decision to scale back efforts to restore red wolves. You can read about this decision by the Fish and Wildlife Service in their evaluation of the restoration efforts (https://www.fws.gov/redwolf/evaluation.html). The environmental groups are fighting the decision (http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/op- ... 97052.html). The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission lost the lawsuit on nighttime hunting of coyotes. The Fish and Wildlife Service will lose the lawsuit that allowed them to issue permits to landowners to kill red wolves.

Seems like the NCHF forum finally decided to put a leash on that BR549 (Scott Griffin) nut. The above user was correct. Scott Griffin is Jett Ferebee's sidekick. He gave an anti-wolf presentation to the NC General Assembly with Jett Ferebee in February 2016. See second paragraph, page 4 (http://www.ncleg.net/documentsites/comm ... inutes.pdf). Here's the presentation - http://www.ncleg.net/documentsites/comm ... tation.pdf

This article associates Scott Griffin with the citizensscience.org website (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/09/22/fe ... -list.html).

The USFWS lost in court. They can't issue kill permits for the last 40 red wolves in the wild.
