Part of the positive feedback loop;
"Arctic amplification of global warming has led to increased summer sea ice retreat, which influences gas exchange between the Arctic Ocean and the atmosphere where sea ice previously acted as a physical barrier. Indeed, recently observed enhanced atmospheric methane concentrations in Arctic regions with fractional sea-ice cover point to unexpected feedbacks in cycling of methane."

or is it a loop within a loop?

I am afraid this is not good. The north polar ice and mid Canada are at the beginning of 2016 each 36*F hotter than normal with large amounts of slush and open water that should be solid ice at this time of year. For supposedly only being up 5*F, why was the Arctic up 20*F this summer and this high now? Is the rapid self release point of methane even closer than 5 to 8 years? God help us.

This year has an Arctic January with 1/6th open ice than should be solid, and temperatures up to 36*F higher than historic. Will 2016 be even worse?
2015 Was Hottest Year on Record—By Far, Early Data Shows

"2015 was far and away the hottest year on record, say scientists at the Berkeley Earth group on Wednesday. Based on their analysis, this group concludes the Earth's temperature in 2015 was clearly more than 1 degree Celsius above the 1850-1900 average for the first time in recorded history."

Some think we could be less than a million square kilometers of polar ice this summer. When melting hits over the Siberian Shelf, watch out. The heat will grow and spread south from the Arctic faster and faster.

For those who have been educated and enamored by science, this is very good and deep. It is quite Spock-like:
Ice-sheet-driven methane storage and release in the Arctic
"It is established that late-twentieth and twenty-first century ocean warming has forced dissociation of gas hydrates with concomitant seabed methane release. However, recent dating of methane expulsion sites suggests that gas release has been ongoing over many millennia. Here we synthesize observations of ~1,900 fluid escape features—pockmarks and active gas flares—across a previously glaciated Arctic margin with ice-sheet thermomechanical and gas hydrate stability zone modelling. Our results indicate that even under conservative estimates of ice thickness with temperate subglacial conditions, a 500-m thick gas hydrate stability zone—which could serve as a methane sink—existed beneath the ice sheet. Moreover, we reveal that in water depths 150–520 m methane release also persisted through a 20-km-wide window between the subsea and subglacial gas hydrate stability zone. This window expanded in response to post-glacial climate warming and deglaciation thereby opening the Arctic shelf for methane release."

Michael G. O'Brien; In reflecting on what feedback could stop ocean boil off and the end of thermal vent "seed life", it could be that as the clouds build up, the albedo change could cool it enough at some point "early" in the process. Then 30 million years for recovery. Or, it could be that methane starts life on a planet and ends it when there is too much. :-k

So far this year, which is the Arctic low temperature season, it has been 16 to 36 degrees above normal, with 1/6th non-ice that 'normally' should be hard frozen. It is at its lowest extent for this season since measurement began by satellite in 1979. The Beaufort, Laptev, and Lara Seas in the Arctic are breaking up early, now. It could hit insufficient ice over the East Siberian Continental Shelf and its 50GTs of methane ready to blow, this summer. There is another 1650 GTs of Arctic methane that will release after the first pulse causes global heat gain of ~10*F, and another 3000GTs in the oceans at various depths. This is a positive feedback loop at the beginning of completion this summer, or possibly as late as 2019.
Here is what others say about it, and links to some of this year's Arctic anomalies.

Taking in the time it would have taken humanity to lower population and emissions to sustainable levels, it all should have happened last century, and now it is too late because of inaction caused by ignorance and denialism.
Its a hell of a thing, to take a planet's life.

Here is the latest, August looks like the month of the 50 GT methane 'burp'.
http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2016/04 ... rming.html
This year will set the third in a row of highest heat ever and we are already well past human experience. Last year gained a full quarter degree F, this year will be closer to a half degree, and in three years it will be going up at 1*F per year. 14 years for the northern hemisphere and 17 for the southern. >Or less.<
Milton  and creeps like him may be in for a big miserable surprise. The changes needed, it turns out, were last century. #-o ](*,) :- :-k [-o< [-X :-({|=

All the knowledge transmission, and activism for future kids, has been in vain, apparently.
The rocket ride is lifting off and accelerating. All the denialism, for so long: well, you won't be denying it anymore, soon.

We might have 12-14 years in the northern hemisphere and 15-17 years in the southern, probably less. It will be on the low side, if Natalia's 50 GT methane 'burp' from ESAS goes as predicted. I'll be watching. It is quite fascinating.

This article could have been written by me, but is by a PhD; http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/22/dragon-watch/
"DRAGON WATCH
Part I
Is the warming Arctic incubating a methane monster that could unleash mass extinction on Earth?
By Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D.
Excerpted in Full from CORAL Magazine, Volume 13, Number 3
May/June 2016 | Introductory Comments

I set out with an assignment to explore and report on predictions of coral reef extinctions in the coming decades. What I found was even worse, the most disturbing science story of my lifetime…and yours, if it happens to come true."

"Scores of City-Sized Siberian Wildfires Spew 2,500 Mile-Long Plume of Smoke Over Northern Hemisphere
Today’s satellite pass by NASA’s LANCE MODIS array tells a dire story that practically no one in the global mainstream media is talking about. Northern and Central Siberia is burning. Scores of massive fires, some the size of cities and small states, are throwing off a great pall of smoke 2,500 miles long.

The vast boreal forests are lighting off like climate-change-enhanced natural fireworks. The tundra and permafrost lands — some of them frozen for hundreds of thousands to millions of years — are thawing and igniting. But for all of the loudly roaring fires, most of the major media reporting agencies have thus far produced only deafening silence.

Country-Sized Swath of Siberia is Covered With Wildfires"

Arctic Death Rattle
"As of August 17th U.S. Naval Research Lab measurements of Arctic sea ice over a 30-day period “shows that the multi-year sea ice has now virtually disappeared,” Storms over Arctic Ocean, Arctic News, August 19, 2016. This means the Arctic has lost its infrastructure. It’s gone.

That means no more 20’-25’ multi-year thick ice, leaving two-dimensional “ice extent” with little thickness and no substantial mass, which charlatans use to prey upon the public’s climate science ignorance by crowing about how far and wide the “ice extent” is during freeze-over so that anthropogenic global warming is made to appear as a hoax. These keynote mountebanks at staged speaking events mislead the public about climate change. They’re found high and low.

In turn, the Arctic negatively affects the entire Northern Hemisphere (source: Jennifer Francis, Instit. of Marine and Coastal Sciences) by altering jet streams at 30,000-40,000 feet altitude, which turns normal weather patterns upside down, wreaking havoc throughout the hemisphere. But, much more significantly, loss of Arctic ice exposes the planet to risks of a crushing blow to the planetary ecosystem, without warning.

Going forward, Arctic ice will consist of young, thin, new yearly ice that easily fractures, turns to slush, turns darker, much more prone to absorbing sunlight, which, unfortunately, could bring on a worldwide catastrophe. Fasten your seat belts!

Ever since the last Ice Age, the Arctic has performed a huge favor by serving as a deep freeze over gigatons of frozen methane (CH4). That locked-in-ice methane, especially in shallow waters where it can make it to the surface in bubbles (already studied by teams of scientists), is a beastly monster beyond anything Hollywood has ever dreamed; it makes Godzilla look like a little whippersnapper.

Natalia Shakhova, head of the Russia-U.S. Methane Study at International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska believes it is possible that a 50-gigaton (Gt) burp of methane erupts along the shallow waters (50-100 m) of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, thereby actuating a fierce self-reinforcing feedback process leading to runaway global warming (5Gt of CH4 is currently in the atmosphere). In turn, life on Earth hits a thud!"
http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/08/22/ ... th-rattle/

There appears to be something going on, the beginning.... :-({|=
