Well, my wife and I decided a while back to have solar power installed on our home. We sat down and really did some number crunching and with some of the incentives and all we decided that it was a good investment that pays off in the long run in a place like Colorado that gets a lot of sunshine. They installed it about 2 weeks ago, and it is working great. We've had pretty nice weather this month and our electric meter has run freakin' backwards! How cool is that? 8) Our decision to do this was pretty much financial all the way, but it really is a win-win situation.

I self installed in 1998, no subsidy or incentive other than doing God's Will. I saved 50% from DIY, then was able to pay off the mortgage that was low from a lot of sweat equity. Off grid, no monthly fee for wires and poles, right in Colorado. Unfortunately, leading by example did not work, and in 2007 the runaway started.

Just out of curiosity what did it cost you?

I spent $13K on a $25K system. Back in '98. Of course, the average person is just not savvy enough to build their own house, all trades, or self-install roof top solar. It takes twice as long to break even.
