Has anyone ever explained why Mary-Anne and Ginger where on a boating tour with about three years worth of clothes?

You have never been married have you? There is a reason women's pocketbooks are larger on the inside than the outside. Also, I can pack for a trip in one small bag while my wife packs two larger suitcases with clothes and has one the same size as mine with cosmetics and stuff. The issue is why ANY of them had luggage on a tour. An island ferry maybe, but a tour boat? No.

Being a desert island would have made it less likely for survival since they would have to make their own drinking water ... but then again it is TV.

Yes, the fascinating Horta; "No Kill I", then Dr. McCoy's famous words, "By God Jim, I think I can cure a rainy day!" (after mortar patch repair of the injured Horta).

I occasionally watched Gilligan's Island stupidity, and visited the set on my first Universal Studios Tour. Got to meet the Skipper and Mary Ann while they were on lunch break, plus a few stars of other shows wandering around.

Back to hunting. I would enjoy hunting with shoot to kill authority, poachers and illegal invaders along with treasonous Americans, for bounty, of course, at least to pay expenses.
