Due to the troubles that killer whales, polar bears and large sharks have been having, seal populations are growing rapidly. Last year, only 8% of the quota for seals was harvested and less is expected to be harvested while populations continue to grow. Fisheries Canada is worried about cod stocks not recovering due to the increased predation of seals who no longer have traditional fish species in sufficient numbers for them to eat. This might be OK for a few years but eventually seals are going to start suffering starvation. I am wondering of ways to intervene or if it is morally acceptable to let nature cull the seals with starvation and disease.

The situation is caused by humans, because they directly or indirectly killed the predators.
So humans should intervene to avoid the seals will die of starvation after have consumed all the fishes.
The solution is trying to restore the original equilibrium, introducing again in that environment the predators of the seals: whales, polar bears and large sharks.

Sorry, I can't see other solutions. ](*,) #-o

So laws to protect whales, polar bears and sharks from unlimited hunting and fishing.

I know another way - allow humans to hunt seals too. You probably do not think so but please make a distinction to what is distasteful but not cruel (clubbing).

If you allow to the humans to hunt the seals they will do this without limits and the situation will not be in equilibrium the same.

It's not logic substitute with the humans the natural predators. The ecosystem should not be ruled only by humans.

Umm polar bears in the region ARE protected from unlimited hunting, and have been for quite a few years. There is still the issue even with the protections.

They have been hunting seals with limits for quite some time, but some of the AR groups have been actively trying to distrupt them none the less.

Yet, that seems to be the only viable alternative.
