Hello all,

I am an Animal Caretaker from northeast Mississippi, originally from Wisconsin and recently transplanted to the south. Whew it's hot! I am the founder of Wolf Howl Animal Preserve.

My passion is wildlife and want to be up all the issues and news concerning them. :D

Northeast MS is as hot as anywhere really, but at least you guys get a winter snow more than once every 6 years. I myself reside in central MS. Welcome to the forums.

I've only been living in Mississippi for the past two years. We had two snows (though being from Wisconsin, I wouldn't really call them that). The snow on the ground was gone before noon. We did, however, run into trouble driving up to Memphis to pickup my boys at the airport. There was ice from Holly Springs to Memphis. It took 7 hours to get there when normally it would only take 1 1/2 hours. A truck had jack knifed across the highway and we sat in one sport for hours. Wisconsin had lots more snow and ice, but it also had removal equipment! :o

Understood. MS hath no snow plows, and people here don't know how to drive in the rain much less freezing precipitation. One would be well-advised to purchase something capable of putting power to all 4 wheels, or all 6, or in my case, both sets of treads.

I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man’s soul and faith
And I was ’round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general’s rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah

Sorry, I could not resist. I tried for a long time ...

That's cool Satan, Jr. or whoever you may be! I love that song. Everytime I see the phrase "introduce yourself" I think of that tune. That's why I headed the topic like that!

We run a small nursery in England, with no regard to wildlife at all - we just grow as many different plants as we can find. We have created a mini wildlife reserve. We keep reading articles on "vanishing" and "Unusual" species, and we have lots of them. Snakes, lizards, butterflies, bumble bees, weasels (who, I an glad to say, mean no rabbits), hawks doves, tits, magpies, jays...and so on. Currently, we rejoice in dragonflies. A volunteer who works for nothing decribes it as a "priviledge to work here". You can barely walk for tits, robins, wrens , thrushes getting under your feet.
There is a lesson for the world. Just grow beautiful, and everything elese follows. The greater the diversity, the more stable (interesting, vibrant) the ecology.

Diversity is the key! That is why we need to keep our predators alive and well!

Maybe in your part of the world, but predators here are reducing diversity.

New Zealand is geographically isolated so there were no natural predators (or even mammals) until humans introduced them.

Now for the most part our domestic bird life teeters on the brink of extinction and has been shipping off to remote pest free islands or 'mainland islands' surrounded by predator proof fences. So in short predators have killed off most of our kiwis, penguins, and native parrots.

I think you would have a hard time arguing that predators are needed here given their effect on our wildlife and forests! :D

If predators were not natural to a particular land mass, they should not be introduced there. I was referring to land where predators had a historic range.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly - I'm not aware of anywhere where life exists without predators! Most places suffer from a serious loss of them - the UK especially.
