Let them (children) be taught to have pity for the animals that are at our mercy, that cannot protect themselves, that cannot explain their weakness, their pain or their suffering.
Soon this will bring to their attention that higher law, the moral obligation of man as a superior being to protect and care for the weak and defenceless.
Nor will it stop there, for this in turn will lead them to that highest law - man's duty to man
- Ralph Waldo Trine

But deep this truth impress'd my mind:
Thro' all His works abroad
The heart benevolent and kind
The most resembles God

I suppose the thing that I would like to have known or be reassured about is that in the world what counts more than talent, what counts more than energy or concentration or commitment, or anything else, is kindness. And the more in the world you encounter kindness - or cheerfulness which is its kind of amiable uncle or aunt - the more ... just the better the world always is. And all the big words - virtue, justice, truth - are dwarfed by the greatness of kindness
- Stephen Fry ('What I Wish I'd Known When I Was 18')

A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble
- Charles H. Spurgeon

If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain as he is.
But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be
