I was almost tempted to buy the Beano annual today just to be reminiscent. But The awakening earth will do for now. |

Ever been to a reenactment, Animal-friendly? The fact that the civil war comes up in discussion, military, social, history would seem to suggest there's something people still want to talk about regarding it. My guess is family history is a big pull. My great, great grandfather Nichols fought for the union: we used to have letters he wrote from the siege of Vicksburg and his overview of what he saw during the battle of Shiloh is chilling. The civil war gets talked about because it effected so much of how the nation is. It's not 'past news' to some. Suggested reading: 'The stars in their course' by Shelby Foote. It covers Gettysburg. For three days, Animal-friendly, the very course of this nation dangled in the balance there. |

just started "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond (?). an oversimplified description is that its an overview of how human civilizations have developed and where we are today, based on the influences of these things in history. Interesting but somewhat dry. |

I really enjoy Diamond, Dogbreath. You might wanna give 'Collaspe' a try, too. I'd like to take a shot at "The 3rd chimpanzee' as well. |

A little trivia, from Guns, germs and steel; It's possible how communities of people develop are influenced by whether the continet they live on is longer north to south, as oppossed to east to west. Also; there's a bit on the domestication of animals. I seem to recall way back, I wanted to pose a hypothetical question regarding such to Wayne Stallings, but he's moved on. Still; I reread that section of the book and see if I can formulate a question or two from it. As said; very good reading, I thought. |
