I have a Cash for Clunkers-eligible vehicle that gets a combined 15 miles per gallon. The vehicle is paid for. I can get a $4500 rebate by trading in for a new vehicle that gets a combined 25 miles per gallon. I'd save $33 per month in gas cost but would have to pay $300 a month to do it...for 60 months at least.

No thanks.

you have to also wonder how much energy it takes to make that new car and dispose of the old one (recycling metals takes energy as is transporting the un-recyclable parts to the dump)

Of course. Now, if only I were able to trade in on a vehicle that got better mileage that was worth the rebate amount or less, I'd be all set. Seems reasonable to me, as there are older cars out there that are ineligible to trade in because the mileage they get is too high. Why the hell can't I have one of those? Go figure. Wouldn't be a bad deal for me to be able to just bring in a car and get a check either. I'm not looking to go into debt.

Has anyone else heard the disturbing financial news about the cash for clunkers program? I read where they paid out 100 million, but the gov't took out 1 billion for it. What happened to the other 900 million?

UK Government’s great initiative towards the disposing off the scrap of old cars is certainly helping the green environment. This is an opportunity for the people who have their old cars rusting in their farms or any scrap yard to earn some amount of money by £5,000 or may be more if you have more than one car to replace it for environment friendly electric vehicle.

I've read in one site but forgot it already that cash for clunkers has around 120,000 rebates that are processed so far. That means $500 million of the CARS program’s $3 billion has been spent, leaving dealers holding the tab on $2.5 billion in clunker deals.

Why would I want to waste resources--time, money, and most of all, energy--recycling a vehicle that's rusting on a farm and otherwise not impacting the environment whatsoever? Let it turn to dirt on its own.

Perhaps even more interesting were the findings on how the program affected future sales. It was believed by many that Cash for Clunkers might have just sped up sales in the short term, advancing sales that would have naturally occurred in future months or years.
