I read this article yesterday and thought it was odd. The kid will find out his/her sex eventually. It will cause confusion for the child if the sex doesn't match up with the gender he/she identifies with. But wouldn't that happen anyway?

Girls and boys are treated different subconsciously, so the parents and siblings will treat the kid with some gender bias even if they try not to. And is it fair to expect the 5-year-old brother to keep this secret and watch his every move so he doesn't show a bias? Can anyone truly do that? The people who have no idea about the sex of the kid can't be as close to him/her, or else they'd find out.

I think that it would be better to let the child decide which gender to identify this and teach him/her how to cope with this if it doesn't match up.

And at least in our language, "it" tends to refer to objects, not people. If this is how they refer to the kid, won't it be damaging?
