Contrary to John Keat's first and second law of Aesthetics ('beauty is truth, truth is beauty') , it appears to me truth and beauty are a million miles apart. Keat's very own ode on its own merit, while denying this by precept, bears it out by example. Truth preoccupies the alethic pole of the intellectual sphere and beauty perhaps the aesthetic pole. Both standing side by side can be admired in their very own intrinsic nature. Can they both be reconciled? |
