Ok, this bugs the heck out of me.
I'm all for gay/lesiban pride, and I wholeheartedly support the gay/lesbian community, but are they really serious about this?! Please tell me that I'm not the only one who sees this as crazy. After all that people have done to have G/L seen as equal and normal.. they do this?! What better way to say "Hey, look at us.. we're different!". Whats wrong with the graduation ceremony everyone else attends? What next.. instead of smoking/non-smoking at restaurants will there be a rainbow or no rainbow section?

I'm with you. Gay pride day, Gay flag colors, gay me gay you, Will and Grace, etc. etc. Enough...

"We're finally ... getting our names and faces out there," says Alex Ferrando, 22, who helped organize the inaugural lavender graduation last month at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Commencement was Sunday"

Who gives a crap you're finally getting your names and faces out there??? So you're proud you're gay. We GET it. There is no reason on earth to brag about it and further, to be proud of your sexual preference. It's private ya lavendar dopes. Speaking of which, what do you call a gay dinosaur?

scroll down..

Mega Soreass

And a lesbian dinosaur?

scroll down..

I don't see any problem with them being proud of who they are.. and their sexual preference is part of who they are. Nothing wrong with gay pride parades and gay flags and such.. there are tons of minorities that display their pride.

What bugs me about the lavendar graduation is that it took a long time for G/L to be accepted, they still struggle with it, and this is just another reason that people are going to use to look down on them. The G/L think they are too good to just have a regular ceremony with the other people.. they have to have a special one just for them. *sigh* It's like living in a neighborhood where you have to paint your house a certain color and you decide to paint yours a different color and wonder why your house gets egged on Halloween or something.

Don't get me wrong, our best friends are gay and I love them dearly. But it's overkill even with them with the gay cruises, gay colors, gay flag tattoo, gay mardi gras, gay fantasy fest, etc. Regardless they're a minority, we're talking about a S E X U A L preference minority. Who cares what they do in the privacy of their bedrooms? And the lavendar graduation is no different than any other of the "out there" practices I mentioned.

I see it as different.. the parties, parades, etc. are something they do to show their pride. It's not like there is a "no matter what your sexual orientation" day parade or such. There IS a graduation for all the students, and the G/L choose to be a part of that as well as having their own ceremony.

It's fine to be proud of your culture, race, religion, sexual preference.. but I don't see the Catholics or blacks wanting their own graduation on top of the one already planned.

The fact that they aren't in the closet? The fact that they aren't ashamed to be gay or lesbian? What are other religious, racial, etc. groups proud of?

The other day I heard about a North Dakota high school with only six members of it's graduating class, and all six were boys.

They decided their class colors would be camo and blaze orange. Their class flower was the tiger lilly. This was picked because it was close to the same color as blaze orange, and had tiger in the name. I wish I remembered the class moto, but it is one only the guys would think is neat.

They went to Disney World for their class trip, and thought it was great with no girls, because they could just keep going on all the rides and not have to always stop to pose for pictures so they could remember the day.

There was no mention of prom night. I suppose they may have spent the night coon hunting. No need for tux rental there.
