things are really smokin' in CA when 105 degrees is considered relief!!
people/cattle/crops all suffering and dying.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14003245/

SAN FRANCISCO - There have been so many deaths from California’s lingering heat wave that authorities in one county began stacking bodies two to a gurney.

Twenty people have died in Fresno County alone, about a quarter of the statewide toll of 81 deaths attributed to the heat. Coroner Loralee Cervantes said Wednesday that decomposition was making the causes of death difficult to determine and the office was running out of space.

Outside, the temperature on Wednesday approached 110 degrees.

I wonder how someone dies from the heat. I'm not saying that it can't happen, but it seems odd to me. Could they not find shade or water?

most deaths in that type of heat are elderly who are in failing health
to begin with and many can't afford a/c in their homes/apts.

What's being in the shade have to do with it? The temperatures they're talking about (110*F) IS in the shade. People who are either dehydrated or are very young or very old don't have the capabilities to sweat properly and thusly it doesn't take long for the core body temperatures to rise quickly to deadly temps(106*F).

I know how they take a temperature reading. I also know what 110 degrees in the shade feels like. It's a lot hotter in the sun. That's what being in the shade has to do with it.

The part about old people makes sense.

Mrm. I can't remember what it was called but in San Diego a couple years ago they had a number that elderly/sick people could call and someone would pick them up and take them to a cool area. There were designated cool areas throughout the county.. malls, offices, etc. that participated and allowed these people to hangout and stay cool.

It was hot enough when I lived out there.. I don't want to imagine how hot it is in the inland areas right now! Yikes.

Been there. It sucks bad. Sometimes it gets so hot during the day here and it just won't cool off til almost dawn. The air will run nearly all night just to keep the house at 80 degrees.
