I was reminded of a story told to me by an old flying buddy, who had zigged when he should have zagged on his way into North Vietnam from a carrier in the Gulf.

Several years later he is flying semi-professionally and was in the area of south Florida when he heard this chatter between the ground control and the traffic in the air.

After a request from a business jet to change altitude to 32,000 feet was acknowledged and allowed, a fighter pilot requested clearance to climb to 40,000 feet out going over the ocean. The tone in his voice was the typical brisk military style, which seemed to be a problem for the civilian controller on the ground as evidenced by the tone and wording of his response.

Another military flight incoming from the ocean made a request to change altitude to 50,000 feet, using the same military tone. Of course, the controller gave permission since that is usually unoccupied air space due to the ceiling limits on the aircraft. He curtly pointed this out by adding "if you can get there" when granting permission. The pilot gave a nearly perfect military reply with one exception. He added some emphasis when he reported that he was descending to 50,000 feet on his way back to base. Of course, it could have only been an SR-71 if it was a conventional military aircraft, but it shut up the controller on the ground and gave the pilots a good round of snickers in respect for the military pilots ... since even many of the commercial pilots were in the reserves or retired military themselves.
