Is it illegal to use a rifle to hunt in Ohio and do you think it is comon hunting practice to hunt deer with a .44 revolver?

I'm not familiar with Ohio's regulations, but in most states up there it is legal to use a rifle on private land, but not public. Muzzleloaders and shotguns are typically used on public land, and it may not be the same over the whole state. Could be different from one area to another.

And I wouldn't say that it's common to use a .44 for deer, but some do it. It's a very good round for short range shots.

I think it's wacky too. They should at least be allowed rifles on private property.

And yes, the carbine's effective range would not be much further than the pistol, but it would be more accurate. They probably don't want people using them since it would encourage longer shots than what the carbine is capable of, since people would treat them more like a rifle.

Hunting regulations generally define the terms either specifically or within the regulation. For example the pistol use is limited by this regulation:

3. Use certain handguns during the youth deer gun season and deer gun season. These handguns must: (a) have a barrel length of not less than 5 inches, (b) use straight-walled cartridges and (c) be .357 caliber or larger.

Thus, while a muzzleloader is a rifle in the case of hunting regulations it is classified differently. In many of the first muzzleloading seasons they only allowed the use of flintlock muzzleloaders but later switched to allow percussion muzzleloaders as well.
