We all hear about general rules of thumb like eight 8-oz glasses a day and dividing body weight by 2 and drinking that much water in ounces. To Grace's point, I'd add that not only are alot of people freaks, but fairly ignorant when it comes to hydration.

I personally take a much simpler approach. First, I do not abide by this crap that in order to properly hydrate, one must only drink water. You can't convince me that coffee, tea, fruit juice, or sports drinks are so much worse.

For everday, "nose-the-grindstone" time at work, I drink just enough to send me to the restroom about once an hour. If I don't go in 2 hours, I drink a bit more. If I go more than once, I cut back. Fairly easy to do.

When I work out I sweat profusely and obviously have to drink more. I can't tell a bit of difference between water and drinks like I mentioned above. OTOH, soda does not bode well for me, but I do know of those who drink it when working out and they do just fine.

The most water I ever drank was while washing a car in 90-something degree heat and humidity--one entire gallon within an hour. Didn't even have to urinate. I sweated off at least 8 pounds of water.
