The Shamsi airbase in 2006 with three drones apparently visible

A recent image of the same base

"The US was secretly flying unmanned drones from the Shamsi airbase in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan as early as 2006, according to an image of the base from Google Earth.

The image — that is no longer on the site but which was obtained by The News, Pakistan's English language daily newspaper — shows what appear to be three Predator drones outside a hangar at the end of the runway"

The differences I noticed between the two is that the old aircraft hanger looks like it has a concrete roof on it now and the new hanger has the high-speed doors and there are three rows of suicide bomber protection, a ditch, a wall and a row of container boxes to block the blast and shrapnel.

Actually I don't think Google was the one that made the initial mistake. It seems we can thank Sen Feinstein for that one.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld ... 6260.story

Quote:
A senior U.S. lawmaker said Thursday that unmanned CIA Predator aircraft operating in Pakistan are flown from an air base in that country, a revelation likely to embarrass the Pakistani government and complicate its counter-terrorism collaboration with the United States.

The disclosure by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, marked the first time a U.S. official had publicly commented on where the Predator aircraft patrolling Pakistan take off and land.

To me the nice part is, the leak came from the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Seems there wasn't a lot of intelligence there on that day.

Why is street view in google earth not as good as in google maps? The title is pretty self explanatory. Google maps has a street view that flows, and is much more convenient to use than the one in google earth, the one in google earth floods my screen with camera icons, and feels really dodgy when I try to move around. Am I missing an option here? Or is it really like that.. And if so, why?
