I was almost tempted to buy the Beano annual today just to be reminiscent.

But The awakening earth will do for now.

As I mentioned long ago in this thread, I read a great deal of history.

It’s not like me to take this long to read a book, but I’ve been slogging through “A History of the Laurel Brigade: Originally the Ashby Calvary or the Army of Northern Virginia and Chew’s Battery”. It’s a tad dry. But they took part in a lot of battles and skirmishes where I’ve visited the battlefield in the past. Once they encamped by a town where I used to work, and twice now near the town where I live. So, while dry, the book holds a certain immediacy for me.

I’m finally in the last chapter and it’s gotten really good. They’ve made a handful of bold raids in the past, but audacity of this is incredible. It wasn’t made by the Laurels per say, but was attended to and planed by former members.

This is right at the end of the American Civil War. About 65 Confederate raiders snuck into Cumberland, Maryland (which was being held by 6 to 8 thousand Federals) and kidnapped two Major-Generals and an Adjunct General, then made their getaway. All without a loss.

The author of my book and the one in the link both quote this earlier and extensive first-hand account of the incident:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mdall ... neills.htm

Not that one would be, but if you’re at all interested it’s been digitized by Google:
http://books.google.com/books?id=m8sCAA ... =0#PPP1,M1

After this, I’m going to catch up on some American Literature. It’s been too long.

Yawn ...

This isn't "yawn" though. Tell us what you catch up on. Should be a sight more interesting than the goons from the civil war ... Which is so over!

Ever been to a reenactment, Animal-friendly?

The fact that the civil war comes up in discussion, military, social, history would seem to suggest there's something people still want to talk about regarding it.

My guess is family history is a big pull. My great, great grandfather Nichols fought for the union: we used to have letters he wrote from the siege of Vicksburg and his overview of what he saw during the battle of Shiloh is chilling.

The civil war gets talked about because it effected so much of how the nation is. It's not 'past news' to some.

Suggested reading: 'The stars in their course' by Shelby Foote. It covers Gettysburg. For three days, Animal-friendly, the very course of this nation dangled in the balance there.

just started "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond (?). an oversimplified description is that its an overview of how human civilizations have developed and where we are today, based on the influences of these things in history. Interesting but somewhat dry. :-k

I really enjoy Diamond, Dogbreath. You might wanna give 'Collaspe' a try, too. I'd like to take a shot at "The 3rd chimpanzee' as well.

A little trivia, from Guns, germs and steel;

It's possible how communities of people develop are influenced by whether the continet they live on is longer north to south, as oppossed to east to west.

Also; there's a bit on the domestication of animals. I seem to recall way back, I wanted to pose a hypothetical question regarding such to Wayne Stallings, but he's moved on. Still; I reread that section of the book and see if I can formulate a question or two from it.

As said; very good reading, I thought.

Wayne Stollings, in case you might actually have misplaced his last name Iowanic. Not sure if you just made a typo or forgot his last name.

The forum as become very odd and disjointed but I do read stuff from time to time. I am quite busy as of late and don't have much time to point out the fallacies of the ARA and anti capitalist rants employed here but when I get a bit of time I might point out the machinery of capitalism drives the meat industry but it is much more invasive in the crop industry market place.

It has become a wee bit little mundane at times, hasn't it?
