After 2001, the US was losing 3 million acres per year of wild lands, ranch lands and farmlands to "development". It didn't decrease until the recession hit in 2008.
The Natural Burial Company makes the Caskit(TM) which I am interested in, as half my friends are dead. I have specified no preservatives, no cremation, and a simple pine box in my Will.
The CasKit comes in six snap together pieces of pine for $368(?) plus shipping. It is supposed to be back in their catalog soon. They also have the Ecopod and various bamboo coffins for more money. I'm sure funeral homes like to get their obscene cut.
Many cemeteries stupidly require a concrete surround so the ground doesn't settle.
Part of the reason for the 67% soil loss and soil nutrient loss of the past century is because of the flush and forget mentality along with the 'bury them in preservatives in a beautiful metal or hardwood casket', or the pollution and waste of 'cremation'. The natural composting of wastes and dead bodies has been stopped as the population skyrocketed into overshoot. People disconnected themselves from the natural system, and came to think of themselves as not animals but something so superior that we were above having to "replenish the Earth", as commanded.
