Conclusions

The current inadequate approaches to management of activities that impact the ocean have lead to intense multiple stressors acting together in many marine ecosystems.

The impact of such stressors is often negatively synergistic meaning that the combination of the two magnifies the negative impacts of each one occurring alone. This is already resulting in large-scale changes in the ocean at an increasing rate and in some regions has resulted in ecosystem collapse. The continued expansion in global population exerts ever increasing pressures on scarcer ocean resources and tackling this issue needs to be a part of the solution to current concerns.

The changes in the ocean that are coming about as a result of human CO2 emissions are perhaps the most significant to the Earth system particularly as they involve many feedbacks that will accelerate climate change.

The resilience of many marine ecosystems has been eroded as a result of existing stressors, leading to increased vulnerability to climate change impacts and a decreased capacity for recovery. An example is coral reefs, the most biodiverse marine ecosystem and one of the most valuable in socioeconomic terms to humankind.

Human interactions with the ocean must change with the rapid adoption of a holistic approach to sustainable management of all activities that impinge marine ecosystems. This has to be part of a wider re-evaluation of the core values of human society and its relationship to the natural world and the resources on which we all rely. As such the current and future state of the ocean should form an integral part of the discussions on sustainable development at the Earth Summit in Rio, 2012.

Gee. This sounds just like this article....

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43479398/ns ... ?GT1=43001

(You beat me to posting this one, Wayne)

Grim news in any case. I found the growing 'dead-zone' in the gulf particlarly depressing. Thank you, factory-farms!

Great article Iowanic! The oceans going to hell, overpopulation strangling the Earth, AGW getting worse and worse toward extinction, underground water going dry while surface fresh water is getting more polluted. The gulf dead zone this year the size of Lake Erie, while our stupid government doesn't kick out illegals and stop all the population gain caused by gross immigration, which must stop(reduce population by 35 million immediately through deportation, stop immigration, go to one child per family like China). The root cause of all of it is the insane >>human<<< >>overpopulation.<<< (world wide)
They (those who have more than one child) are just too selfish, greedy, and generally stupid (the lowest IQ out-breed the highest by 12 to 1 or more!) to think of the consequences of their actions in seven generations. Now, humanity may not even have that time left before they and almost all the other species go extinct from what they did(pollution too far, depletion of resources too far, overpopulation too far into overshoot).
My God, we knew about overpopulation in the 1960s (MLK's speech), and other eco-problems by the 1970s(Rockefeller Commission), and much more by the early 1990s("Elephants in the Volkswagen", "Global Warming") . Yet the US refused to lead the way, and instead has allowed us to become a seemingly third world country in my 63 years (look at the economy, the sheer number of immigrants of the type and quantity that did NOT build the USA or win WWII, and their offspring who were not here before, press 1 for English!. the average IQ down to 94 from 100).
If only.....if only......if only.......
BASTARDS!!!!!! :x :x :x :x

We are not a third world country. We are still first world, unless we allow the Federal Reserve to overcome the economy, or too many imports from China.

All is true. The oceans, overpopulation, peril to our oceans (air and earth) ..... It's all happening. Let me get this clearly. Is all of this happening and actually caused by illegals flooding into the country called the United States of America? The oceans are just one harbinger of ecological collapse and species extinction and this is because of immigrants?

They are just too selfish, greedy, and generally stupid to think of the consequences of their actions in seven generations.

We all need to think about the next 7 generations. Even the CEO's of major oil corporations need to think about the next generations. But I generally doubt they are. They are, afterall, much more responsible to their shareholders than they are to, hmmm, let's see,... a seal for instance.

Now, humanity may not even have that time left before they and almost all the other species go extinct from what they did.

Now from animal lover;

JE's comment to this garbage: Overpopulation of the USA, the past 50+% gain is near 90% from immigrants and their children, all with way over sustainable breeding rate average of 4.4 per 25 years. If the population was back to 200 million, there would be 35% or so less pollution, less depletion, etc. The 1965 Immigration Act experiment has been a disaster.

They are just too selfish, greedy, and generally stupid to think of the consequences of their actions in seven generations.

JE's comment: I agree, they should be taken out and composted.

It is not garbage Johnny. It's simply true .... beyond the opinion of either of us. It's beyond both of us because overpopulation is occurring on the planet. You and I live amongs almost 7 billion people all living on this planet ... the one called Earth. You may hold your citizenship as gold, but your citizenship (and mine) is conceptual whereas this planet is fact. Water, including the Ocean, has no citizenship. Air has no citizenship. Neither needs a passport to filter into your environment.

Sorry, who are "they" again? Darn those selfish, greedy, stupid "others"!

This statement comes from anger. It's a reaction. I get it. I have them too.

And humanity is everywhere. Here we are Johhny.

The human CO2 caused acidification of the oceans is approaching the kill point for many critical species. The 6 plastic trash gyres are huge and killing many more. Over one hundred estuary dead zones increasing and expanding. The mercury fallout(from coal power) is poisoning food fish and the fisheries are in collapse that will complete between 2035 and 2050. Rising sea levels accelerating to mid century inundation of coast planting areas, reducing area and food further.
