A new company has secured "$38 million in capital from Google, Kleiner Perkins and more" to develop better ways to transform electricity. These technologies could double or triple the amount of electricity reaching homes from the same amount of source energy. These technologies could make electric cars more powerful and lighter and cheaper and most important, more efficient.
note that they only adressed conversion losses in their chart but transportation losses are quite a bit higher and these losses can be greatly reduced using high voltage DC lines instead of AC... if only they could efficiently make the ac-dc-ac conversions or transform the power with "ladders" and other electronics tricks instead of transformers. I would suspect they would look into those things too while messing with better transformer methods.
