A Paradise man says he is lucky to be alive after an attack by a mountain lion Monday morning.

Robert Biggs, 69, often hikes in the Bean Soup Flat area, which is about a mile and a half above Whisky Flats. He came across a mother bear, a yearling and a newborn, which were about 40 feet from where he was standing.

After watching the bear family for a few minutes he decided to leave them be and turned to walk back up the trail. As he turned, a mountain lion pounced on him grabbing hold of his backpack with all four paws.

I believed the story up to the playing patty-cake with the baby bear. Sure the story can be partially true, Mother bears have been known to come to the aid of other animals. I suspect some embellishment came into play.

Don Quixote Lives but I think Sancho Panza is toast after sharing to much peyote with the Windmill chaser. Almost as bad as listening to another of Timothy Threadwell's misinterpretation of walking with bears. .

Maybe so Ann. It's hard to know for sure .... but the guy had been traversing that area for longer than the mamma bear had been alive. According to his account, he had seen her a few times, but I bet she had seen him more often without him even being aware of it. The "patty cake" part of the story is a little hard to imagine though ... I think he is mostly telling the truth and may have embellished the "patty cake" part himself. Regardless, a very interesting encounter for sure!
