The two things I would add to solar as a power source that are often overlooked are:

- if you are using the solar for heat, it is best to keep it as heat and thus store it as heat.

- by storing room temperatures in a large volume of dirt, heating and cooling needs can be provided without solar (just store summer temperatures for winter use and vice versa or day temperatures for night and vice versa) and this frees up a lot of south exposure for use in higher temperature solar (cooking , hot water) and solar cells but also for greenhouse use as greenhouse food production eliminates a lot of transport and farming and processing energies as well as a lot of packaging and trash related energies.

I have been on solar power, totally off the grid, for 11 years now. I sacrifice some on cloudy days, but it is sunny most of the time. Flat screen TV and computer monitor, big guitar amps being played loud, a passive solar Earthship greenhouse still gives me vegetables year around.
My solar paid for itself 5 years ago, because I had the good sense to do it myself, and I live in an area of 5 hours minimum winter sun.
I have not been to this forum for a while because I lost everything in a computer crash last summer. Finally, I was directed by an email to theenvironmentsite.org (full of AGW denialists) and finally back here where it seems better than before. It is nice to be at a place where AGW and OP denialists are not butting in and over-posting to ruin threads. I do see a few getting away with off topic joking around where it doesn't belong. Still, great threads on pertinent environmental topics.

I've read somewhere that It takes an area about the size of 9% of the state of Nevada to supply all of the energy demands in the U.S. A drwback is that it's only producing electricity during the day but still it's quite amazing! I agree with you that we can live off the sun instead of oil and coal.

How about more people getting involved with do it yourself solar power, and getting rid of the wasteful grid.

Solar power has more disadvantages than positive traits. Moreover, it is ineffective in many ways.

Hi, I was just curious to know that what about in heavy rainfall and snowing days. How the solar panels companies manages to save their solar mirror. I am using solar panel Colorado services but I put a cover on my solar mirror so it will be save from heavy rain and snow. But big solar panels companies who generate electricity they set up their plant in open , can you tell how they save them.
