chinchillas are known to detect when their owners are troubled by something and instead of being full of energy and taking every second of free time out of their cage for running around, they will stay with the human with concern. Chinchillas have been wild until less then 200 years ago and are still primarily raised for fur coats so this empathy is hardwired for empathizing with other chinchillas in the wild.
