Going to some of the other videos brought back distant memories of my trip to Disneyland in 1958. I remember riding the cups and rocket planes, and Mickey Mouse and Pluto, and the ride on the boat. The tomorrowland house was on an episode of Walt Disney Presents. Plastic was thought of as "cheap", but we had formica counter tops and linoleum on some floors.
Days of innocence when we didn't know the toxicity of the first 45 RPM records we bought.........

Polio was conquered then. Communist expansion was temporarily stopped, threat of nuclear war (the cold war) lasted until 1989, sexism was mom in charge, little sister saying I hit her when I didn't(and getting whipped), and mean woman teachers......
More good things; the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster, '57 Chev, color TV, westerns, Elvis and rock and roll!!!

Polio was a big problem for most of the 1950s since there was no vaccine program until 1955.

1952 - There are 58, 000 cases of polio in the United States, the most ever. Early versions of the Salk vaccine , using killed polio virus, are successful with small samples of patients at the Watson Home for Crippled Children and the Polk State School, a Pennsylvania facility for individuals with mental retardation.

1953 - Amid continued "polio hysteria," there are 35, 000 cases of polio in the United States.

1954 - Massive field trials of the Salk vaccine are sponsored by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.

1955 - News of the successful vaccine trials is announced by Dr. Thomas Francis Jr. of the University of Michigan at a formal press conference held April 12 in Ann Arbor (the site where the research data from the field trials had been gathered and analyzed). A nationwide vaccination program is quickly started.

1957 - After a mass immunization campaign promoted by the March of Dines, there are only about 5600 cases of polio in the United States.

1958 and 1959 - Field trials prove the Sabin oral vaccine, which uses live, attenuated (weakened) virus, to be effective.

1962 - The Salk vaccine is replaced by the Sabin oral vaccine, which is not only superior in terms of ease of administration, but also provides longer-lasting immunization.

Yes, I got my polio shot in 1955. I remember earlier lots of kids got it, especially way back when FDR got it.
What would be the Fender Telecaster stated out in 1950 as the Broad caster, then the "nocaster", then in 52 the Telecaster, '53 the Les Paul Goldtop with P90s, and 1954 the Statocaster, also when the Stratofortress came out. PAF (patent applied for ) Seth Lover humbuckers came out in 1957 with Buddy Holly really making the strat a rock and roll machine. So Gibson came out with the Flying V, Explorer and Moderne (which didn't make it), but the Les Paul with PAFs started to finally take off.
Meanwhile us little kids were stuck with garbage cowboy acoustics, Davy Crockett "coonskin" hats, and Red Rider BB guns we got into trouble with.
We got our first TV in 1957, and our door to door salesman set of Encyclopedia Britannica, which I read completely. Old movies and Sky King and the Whirlybirds, Bugs Bunny and Rocket J. Squirrel, and the wonder of the first big screen movie I saw, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The Blue Angels in their Korean War fighters, tree forts, and learning to swim well.
Then In 1959, my first chemistry set and record player.......
Most dreamed of going to Disneyland, but I really got to go. It was a magic time. We first went to California(LA, before smog) from Minneapolis in 1957 by Lockheed Constellation, then in 1958 by train down through Texas and Arizona with the Vistadome.
Every kid that got to go to Disneyland, and later Disneyworld, too, had a magic time. I think they still do.
Walt Disney was quite a guy and really loved kids. I know I sure loved him, too.
