Hi everyone! My name's Alexander. I am the owner and broker of Apartments Rent Rebate Inc., a real estate company specializing in apartment locating service and luxury apartment rental in the Dallas and Fort worth, Texas.

I joined this forum because I wanted to get more tips on how I can practice green living. I want to live a greener life and I want to start it with my own apartment. So far, the ones I have done are sorting out my trash - separating recyclable materials from non-recyclable ones, biodegradable from non-biodegradable and minimizing energy and water consumption.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :)

Hello! To be green you have to have one or no kids, be totally on solar/wind power, drive and electric or hybrid car minimally, grow a lot of your own food and buy locally, compost your excrement and kitchen scraps, minimal water use and water recycling, minimal consumption lifestyle, the three Rs, and go for a natural burial. Like me!!!

I want to make very green apartments myself. The easiest giant leap to green you can sometimes make (depending on building design) is to go with composting toilet systems. If you have a need for cooling, you need to treat the building like people in cold climates... air tight and good insulation and "heat recovery ventilation" which is a air-to-air heat exchanger to cool the fresh outside air to indoor temperature using the coolth in the stale wet indoor air removed from bathrooms and kitchens. Look at "earth tubes" and ground-source heat pumps for more cooling options. radiant cooling, like radiant heating, is more efficient then changing the air temperature because our perceived temperature of the room is mostly based on the relative temperature of the surfaces around us. This is also how "low-e" windows work... they let visible light in but they stop infrared light which is heat coming from hot objects outside the windows (including the ground). Efficient lighting also makes a difference due to the heat the lights make... this is also how "day lighting" and "task lighting" will help the cooling load save far more money and energy then even the savings from the lower wattage of the lights.
