I've had arguments with Marxists on how we should proceed. On the population question they claim capitalists generate overpopulation to keep the working class desperate, ie afraid of losing their jobs to the abundance of competing laborers, so they won't strike for higher pay and mess with profits.

Whatever truth there is to that, it seems a bit tortured. From what I can see, it is generally religious fundamentalist types that are most resistant to family planning. In any case saying socialist thinking must precede dealing with population would take so much time before folks got the message we would be going off the cliff anyway.

What I suggest to my Marxist pals is they focus on population and then in the process show how capitalists are an obstacle if that is their opinion. That way you go to the heart of the matter and deal with it directly adding an analysis that illuminates the obstructions thrown up along the way. Putting the cart before the horse will pretty much put us in an ideological stall that will lead to die-off.

Needless to say my suggestion hasn't been taken well. Folks become addicted to their ideological cul-de-sacs and trying to talk sense to them mostly seems useless.

I doubt they would agree.
