I hoped the hopium for a long time. Now I accept with serenity that it is totally out of our hands.

All our efforts, our leadership and example, the sacrifices..............for me, since 1967, and it seems in vain, for nought. The very best it could be is a 100K year to surface life deal, with 30 million years to totally recover. The worst case is a 200*C surface, subsurface and lower atmosphere, with H2O/CO2/N/NO2&3/CH4, trace gases, and very low O2.

We will not know if what we have wrought will "just" have caused a greater than Permian extinction, that stops runaway with albedo change and long recovery, or if it will blow through to 100% methane turnover and a permanent 200*C surface until the sun goes nova and absorbs the Earth. I also hope life comes back, but the same processes go on throughout the universe. CH4 seeding from comets during planetary accretion results in life, and more CH4, until too much kills life. Man, I would hate to live in your world. No universities? Come on.. I love learning, and so do many other people. It's one of the best signs of an improving society to have so many universities. Further, I think you're forgetting that the underlying concept behind the Olympics is actually cooperation through competition... It helps countries compete in a non-violent manner to prove their superiority. It's actually quite advanced. Further, the Olympics gave very special attention to the issue of climate change this year, meaning hundreds of millions of people watched. This is great news and means things are actually looking up. We have a lot of progress to make, but it won't be made by railing against industrial society and universities, which are some of the most eco-friendly establishments out there.
