First I must say I really enjoy learning about the environment and plant life in our California deserts.
I guess this would have never taken place without the closure of 49,300 acres my family and friends enjoyed for many years before. You see I'm an off-roader and have recreated at the Imperial Sand Dunes over the past 20 years. Having fun outdoors with nature is wonderful and looking at the beauty that surrounds you, well what could be better.
I have learned so much about desert plants the past few years, especially the Peirson's Milkvetch. That plant is currently listed as an ESA Threatened plant and it only grows at the dunes. It is one of the 400 varieties of the Astragalus magdalenae species. It is a very strong and smart plant we have found out, knowing when to germinate and all.
One of the best joys is riding in a sandrail traveling over sand hills. You see Mother nature keeps the dunes so smooth with her wind it is like your the first person to explore it.
Riding in the open larger dunes where vegetation doesn't grow is just plain AWESOME.
And that is where everyone rides too.
