What I find interesting is how conveniently how many supporting these "protests" are trying to blur the line between immigration/immigrants and illegal immigrants. This really ticks me off because if we really need immigrant labor, then we should be making it easier for immigrants from all kinds of countries enter this country LEGALLY. To me, normalizing illegal immigrants only serves to reward people for breaking our immigration laws and indirectly punishing those potential immigrants trying to play by the rules by not allowing them to enter this country to fill the "immigrant labor" needs.

Most of my friends and people I socialize with are recent immigrants who entered this country legally and many have even become naturalized citizens. I also know of many friends of friends who would like to enter this country legally (even just to visit as tourists) but find the way blocked. I do not see why we should show preference to people who broke our laws to get into this country and I do not see why we should show preference to make it easier to enter this country from say Mexico than we do from say Russia.

I also believe that many of the companies who were supporting these protests by allowing their employees to take the day off did so because they want slack labor laws in regards to hiring illegal immigrants as it is easier to take advantage of illegals because of their fear about reporting their employer's violations of labor laws (e.g. health and safety; wage and hour; etc.).

Companies that are caught employing illegal immigrants should be fined so hard that it is not economically viable to risk hiring illegals and the management/owners responsible for the hiring should be thrown in jail. I do think that while they have other downsides, a mandatory national ID cards would help solve the problem with documenting who can legally work in this country.
