Croc Hunter Irwin killed by stingray

World famous wildlife warrior Steve Irwin has died in a freak accident on
the Great Barrier Reef, killed by a stingray barb which pierced his chest.

Friends believe the Crocodile Hunter, 44, may have died instantly when
struck by the stingray while filming a sequence for his eight-year-old
daughter Bindi's new TV series.

So I've read a bunch of the accounts of what happened, and I am still perplexed. I've had the privilege of swimming with many stingrays, manta rays and eagle rays and I've never had a problem. In fact, most people know that unless you actually step on one of them, the chances of getting stung are almost nil. Further, for the stingray to have enough force behind it to puncture his skin, rib cage and pierce his heart, it would have had to have a hell of a lot of leverage and power behind it. I just have a hard time understanding how this happens under normal conditions.

The account that is being circulated is that he was "just swimming above the stingray" which seems incredibly dubious to me. He was a hell of an advocate for the conservation of snakes, reptiles and other critters. It's a shame that he's dead.

One report I read indicated that the stinger penetrated below the ribcage and angled upward to the heart, which is possible but also unusual.
