Hi, my name is Ian, from New York City. I have recently been reading much about world history, the destruction of the environment, and economics and have realized the growth of the economy coincides with the destruction of the environment and this has been evident all throughout history. Now that the world is "smaller" the destruction is much more apparent and is accelerating.

My most vivid memories as a child were in a country house off of Lake Champlain in Vermont next to a 400 acre farm. In contrast to the dirty, diesel-fume-filled air of the city - it was paradise many urban dwellers do not experience.

I majored in illustration in college and got my BA a year ago. I am currently searching for any sort of environmentally-related job in New England to get my foot in the door and begin a career serving the Earth rather than a destructive "machine." I have not read many posts yet, however, from what I have read I have received a good impression in contrast to the "Revolutionary Left" forums I attempted to share my views with (a very angry, narrow-minded bunch).

I'm here to further my involvement in environment-related issues and events and gain some knowledge as well as discuss my point of view with you all.

Welcome Ian, it sounds like your experiences may be more rounded than many of your peers. You will find some very angry folks on the right, left, and some that cannot be quantified, but they will be civil-ish ....

Welcome, Ian. Can I do a shameless self-plug here? On our site. specifically here, we collect links of companies that think like you. If you stumble upon a company, would you be so kind to let us know? They are hard to track down.

Sound like you had a pleasant enough youth, I'm getting rather envious, although I can't really complain.

A very valuable site, indeed. I added it to my bookmarks. Here is a link to a site I stumbled upon which, I think, fits your criteria perfectly:

http://www.biome.com.au/index.php

Just thought I would mention another reason to use dark colours for web pages (regarding energy and monitors), the monitors should last longer too which would reduce the chemical load and embedded energy of those monitors.

I am starting three companies (that all are connected but unique in mission) and all should have a positive impact on the environment in some way. I will try to get listed when I get a website going for each. These three companies are:
1) alternate energy construction contractor (may be coupled with a non-profit research organization that tests ideas on alternate energy ideas)
2) alternate farming methods (small animals and automated greenhouses which make for local foods that avoid embedded energy due to transport, packaging, fertilizers and pesticides, storage when functioning year-round)
3) media production company specializing in instructional videos on alternative energy construction and "green" agriculture and entertainment with ecological messages.
