Many times I asked my kids, how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood. And I always told them the answer was 210. Now I'm sure, just like my kids, Wayne is about to challenge that answer. My response would be, if you feel 210 is incorrect please show us what you feel is the correct answer. It would also be helpful if you'd show us the mathmetical formula you used.

A challenge? We have not had a challeng in so long .......

I consulted with a learned collegue who specializes in such calculations, he is the one who calculated the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop, and got his answer.

It is three!!!!

The proof is here in his formula:

f(x) dx = lim (d -> 0) (k=1..n) f(X(k)) (x(k) - x(k-1))

(note the fonts of this board do not support all of the symbols used in the formula above)

I asked in what units but he did not give an answer on that. I have also noticed that ALL of his answers seem to be three as well .......

Well I have to admit you took it to a much higher level then I did. You even used a formula.

Now I will admit my answer isn't as techinical as yours. And 210 is an average. Of course I'm sure you'll agree that when dealing with things like wood and woodchucks there are many varibles, so one consistent answer is hard to come up with. The age and size of the woodcuck have to be accounted for, and of course the time of year. Woodchucks can't chuck wood as fast when it's hot outside. And then we have to account for the type of wood. Hard woods don't chuck as easy as soft woods. But then what self respecting woodchuck would chuck soft wood, right? So it always seemed to me, that no mathmetical formula would accurately show how much wood a woodchuck would chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood.

My answer comes from the observation of woodchucks chucking wood when it would be time for wood chucking. And after watching numerous woodchucks chuck some wood, I averaged out their results and came up with 210. I understand you may be a bit skeptical about this, and for some reason my kids felt the same way. I've always felt this conversation leads to an even more interesting question.

What do woodchucks do with all the wood they chuck?

What do woodchucks do with wood? That seems to be a good question but maybe not the best for mixed company. It may result in screaming oppossums or Jhawk getting hot flashes ...... \:D/

Here's a few from the Internet...

1) Why is there only one Monopolies Commission?

2) If it is zero degrees outside today and it is supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow how cold will it be?

3) Why do you press harder on a remote control when you know the battery is dead?

4) Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

5) How much deeper would the ocean be if sponges didn't grow in it?

6) If man evolved from monkey and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

7) Before they invented drawing boards what did they go back to?

8 How is it possible to have a civil war?

9) If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?

10)Why is it called the tourist season if you can't shoot them?

11)If the black box flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash why isn't the whole plane made out of the same stuff?

:-s

Well now that you've brought it up. Maybe you should explain to us how screaming oppossums and Jhawk's hot flashes are connected by woodchuck's chucked wood. Now I don't expect you to go into great detail. As you've said it is mixed company. But before today I would have thought the ony way Jhawks hot flashes and screaming oppossums could have been related, would have been if Jhawk, during a hot flash, was beating an oppossum with a broom and it started screaming.

I look forward to seeing how these two subjects are connected by woodchuck chucked wood. I know there's probably a lot of people out there they have doubts you can show the connection. But unike the others I have faith in your abilities.

Here's a pic of a Woodchuck aka groundhog choosing the wood he/she is about to chuck...

Woodchucks have formed their own Company with all the wood they have chucked....
Quote from their advertisement...

http://www.thewoodchuck.org/

' Working predominately in pine, but in other woods as requested, "THE WOODCHUCK" strives to accentuate and display the natural beauty of wood. We use only water-based stains, dyes or other coloring on the wood. Each item is covered with several coats of Polyurethane to give it a hard, lasting finish. We use no decals. All decorations are hand-painted and are unique. We can do most requests, but will not reproduce copyrighted materials....'
