The Northwest Earth Institute develops programs that empower individuals and organizations to protect the earth. Through a series of four discussion courses, NWEI works to "motivate individuals to examine and transform personal values and habits, to accept responsibility for the earth, and to act on that commitment."

NWEI offers discussion courses on Deep Ecology, Choices for Sustainable Living, Discovering a Sense of Place and Voluntary Simplicity. Groups of 8 to 12 individuals gather to take these courses in their workplaces, homes and centers of faith. Since its founding by Dick and Jeanne Roy in Portland, Oregon in 1993, enrollment in Northwest Earth Institute courses has reached over 40,000 across the country.
