CNSC is an independent, non-profit research institute with a mandate to facilitate research and education in the sub-arctic. It offers environmental education programs; including EarthWatch, Learning Vacations and Elderhostel.

The CNSC is an active research facility that provides logistical support to researchers working in the Hudson Bay region. In addition, the CNSC monitors climate change through several long-term ecological research sites.
It also offers all-inclusive courses that highlight various environmental topics relevant to the sub-arctic. These tours include classroom instruction, meals, accommodations and local transportation.
