Detailed Information:
The Allegheny Defense Project was founded in 1994 as the only group focusing on the protection of Pennsylvania's sole national forest-the 513,000-acre Allegheny National Forest. ADP began to organize in response to the large-scale clearcutting practices embraced by the U.S. Forest Service, which threaten the watersheds, biodiversity, and recreation industry of the area.In order to protect and enhance the Allegheny's ecological integrity and biodiversity, ADP has adopted a goal for the Forest of ending commercial logging in the Allegheny and shifting the management focus towards the restoration it so badly needs. Since the ADP formed, the amount of timber sold from the national forest has decreased from 65 million board feet in 1994 to 2 million board feet in 1999.
