Detailed Information:
The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), India has set up the Environmental Information Centre (EIC) to function as a professionally managed clearing-house for environmental information. The Centre began to function as a pilot project in the year 2002.
The primary objective of EIC is to act as an one-stop source for quality environmental data on India. Various stakeholders including the MoEF, Regulators, Project Proponents, Consultants, Non-profit/ Community based organisations and Financial Institutions, are using the diverse applicability of the EIC data as a planning and decision-making tool.
The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), enables EIC to provide site specific information, proving to be particularly helpful in the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments.EIC acts as a repository of Indian environmental data for improving the quality of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). The provision of reliable environmental data in a timely manner, accelerates the process of Environmental Clearance (EC).
