Detailed Information:
Now in its 37th year, the Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) has introduced over 50,000 youth to the
outdoors. YOP offers outdoor leadership and skills training to Boston and New York City area youth workers so that they may in turn lead the youth they serve outdoors. Once successfully trained, youth workers may borrow YOP equipment at no cost, to make outdoor trips with their youth a reality. Workshops are taught by experienced youth workers, accomplished in leading outdoor trips, who understand the specific needs and challenges of taking groups of youth into the woods. Free equipment use, reduced rates at AMC lodging facilities, trip planning assistance, and networking are just
a few of the many exciting things YOP has to offer.

Whether you have been backpacking before or are a seasoned outdoorsperson, the Outdoor Leadership Training (OLT) is designed for you! The OLT will teach you the skills you need to lead outdoor trips with youth-and successful completion will qualify you to become
a YOP Leader, entitling you and your agency to benefit from all YOP’s services such as free equipment use. The training consists of a pre-trip meeting at the AMC in Boston and, depending on the training you chose, three to five days of outdoor adventure in New Hampshire. No experience is required. Through experiential learning, this exciting and intensive training will allow you to gain leadership experience, practice camping skills, and learn valuable information about leading youth on outdoor adventures.
