Detailed Information:
Current campaigns include: Old Growth protection. We have stalled plans to log over 6,000 old growth trees 2 1/2 miles north of Grand Canyon National Park. The Kaibab Plateau at the north rim of the Canyon holds one of the world's great ponderosa pine old growth landscapes. We are proposing this magnificent area for designation as an Old Growth Preserve. Wilderness inventory. The Southwest Forest Alliance is taking a leading role in identifying the roadless lands of Arizona. Volunteers are needed throughout the state. Ponderosa pine restoration. We are trying to guide the practice of 'restoration' away from intensive industrial treatments that remove up to 95% of the trees and may even cut down the largest old growth trees on a site. We are developing a light-touch 'natural process restoration' method that is careful to preserve wildlife habitat while moderating fire behaviour and encouraging grasses, understory plants, and large tree survival.
