Detailed Information:
The southern Appalachian Bog Turtle is the sacred animal of the indigenous people of seven SW Virginia counties, three of which are also the last hold out of the Appalachian Bog Turtle. Development in the Blue Ridge Mountains threatens the existence of this animal in Virginia. Just recently, the southern variety of Appalachian Bog Turtles has come under federal protection. Unfortunately. this protection may have come too late. We urge all Native Americans and environmentalist to help us to save this animal which is the heritage of all Americans, especially the people of the Ani-Stohini/Unami Nation, the tribe of Southwestern Virginia. Even though the federal government has now protected the Bog Turtle the Copeyan proposal page remains the best source of information about the Bog Turtle.
