The council works toPromote interest, education, knowledge and pride in the national Heritage. It facilitates the appreciation and enjoyment of the national heritage and co-operates with other bodies in the promotion of its functions. It promotes the co-ordination of all activities relating to its functions. The heritage council was established by act of government in 1995 and has statutory responsibility for the identification, protection, preservation and enhancement of the national heritage. Heritage is defined as including monuments, archaeological objects, heritage objects, architectural heritage, flora, fauna, wildlifehabitats, landscapes, seascapes, wrecks, geology, heritage gardens and parks and inland waterways.
